User interface design for social media platform

Challenge
The client wanted to develop a dish review app where users could review and search for specific dishes. They required a working prototype to present to investors.
Specification
Through discussions with the client about budget and desired functionality we identified the key requirements for a minimal viable product. These were:
1. Search for a dish
2. Review a dish
3. Create a profile
4. Earn achievements
The client already had a set of well-developed wireframes for the project and a lot of ideas. It was important that in the early stages of the project we worked collaboratively with the client to define the deliverables they required within the agreed budget.
Journey mapping
Mapping out the different task flows helped to understand the app architecture and define what components would be required for each screen.
Wireframing
Hi-fidelity wireframes were used to produce a clickable prototype with InVision. This gave the opportunity to test the design and make improvements to streamline interactions where required.

Visual design
The visual design aimed to create a fun and vibrant environment for the use to encourage engagement.

Red was chosen as the primary colour. It is the most common and effective colour used in the food industry as it is known to enhance appetite.
Feedback
User testing provided valuable insights into how the user experience could be enhanced.
Early iterations featured the traditional 'feed' common in other social media apps. However, to keep the content fresh and engaging and to encourage users to return frequently, the home screen was redesigned with a more magazine-like aesthetic.
The new layout allowed the client to showcase the best reviews through curated and dynamically populated collections.
User engagement
As the app content would be primarily user generated it was important that the design compelled the user to create new content and engage with existing content.
Users are awarded badges for completing actions that benefit the app’s ecosystem, such as creating reviews, liking posts, and sharing content on other social media networks. The initial badges are easy to earn, but they become progressively more challenging to obtain, preventing users from completing the game too quickly.
Summary
The client presented the working prototype to potential investors and was able to secure additional funding towards expanding functionality and building out features that would provide revenue streams.
